Where Are You?

As a student of strategy, I search for the future. I am also grounded in the present. One eye on here and one eye on there – constantly measuring the gap between those two places and calculating the next steps.

It is important to know where you are and where you are going. I think it’s equally important to know where you are “not.

Regardless of the challenges you face, no matter how weary you feel – even if you are disappointed with how things have turned out so far, you are NOT:

  • Emptied of your value
  • Far from an inspiring breakthrough
  • Beyond the reach of hope and faith
  • Without viable options
  • Alone on this journey

If today finds you in a difficult place, take a moment to recognize where you are not.

As always you bring us to a point of one of a few necessities we need in life – the opportunity to spend time in thought. Of course you are right, knowing where you are and where you are going are as important as where you are not and many assume that where you are is equal to where you are NOT.

I like to think where we are is not equal to where we are not but the culmination of where we have been. Assessing our passed experiences in the here and now acts as a guide in our future choices. Where we are NOT is equal to the things we cannot control and therefore should not consume us. This is one of the most difficult challenges we face in our career and in life.

Hello Marty! And as always you have such a marvelous way of building on the ideas here and encouraging us to reach even deeper. Thank you for that – for taking the time to reflect and comment. I am always glad to see you. Dondi

I love this post! I agree in the importance of allowing your vision to help you plan for the future, while keeping your attention and feet firmly planted in the present. It is when we get stuck in the past, or too far ahead of ourselves in the future, that we lose our ability to move in any direction in the moment.

Thank you for the reminder that no matter what we are facing in our current circumstances, we are never without options or power to move beyond them. :-)

Thank you Dr. Shannon! Your comment reminds me that we can “overdo” the planning and reflecting thing too. If we spend too much time “back there” or “way out there” we can get stuck.
